Education for Ministry (EfM)

Join in EfM Online: Fall 2021

EfM Online provides a way for people to take advantage of the EfM program regardless of where they live. The seminar sessions are once a week on Zoom, so anyone with a device (computer, laptop, tablet, phone) that can run Zoom can participate.

ECMN’s School for Formation is supporting an online group in ECMN this year. The course will begin in mid October and finish in June, with time off for holidays.

This year, the SFF will help subsidize the cost of the program for ECMN folks. The usual cost is $375. SFF will kick in $100 per person, for a final cost to participants of $275. If even that is a hardship, contact the EfM Coordinators below for possible additional scholarship help.

What is EfM?

Education for Ministry is one of the best-kept secrets in the Episcopal Church! It is a program for lay people who want to live more fully into their Baptismal Covenant in daily life.

Education for Ministry is

  • A deep dive into the Christian Tradition
  • A dynamic adult learning environment where participants shape their own goals and do discernment of ministry in community
  • A small group community experience like no other

Education for Ministry is NOT

  • Preparation for ordained ministry
  • A traditional Bible study

Education for Ministry is a four-year course of study and reflection that connects the Christian Tradition to everyday life. Participants commit one year at a time and become part of a group process that can be transformational.

  • Year 1: Old Testament
  • Year 2: New Testament
  • Year 3: Church History
  • Year 4: Theology and Ethics, Interfaith Relationships

Sponsored by the School of Theology at the University of the South in Sewanee Tennessee and the Episcopal Church in Minnesota, the fee for a year of EfM is $375, with the possibility (based on the number in the group) for a reduced fee of $175 for participants with financial needs. The fee includes all books needed for the year (except for a Bible) and a small honorarium for the mentors.

During the Covid 19 pandemic, EfM face to face groups are typically meeting on Zoom.

EfM Online provides a way for persons to take advantage of the EfM program even when they don’t have an EfM group nearby. Please contact one of the ECMN Co-coordinators for more information!
