Heads up, clergy folk in Minnesota: it can be hard to get perspective on the news these days. The international refugee crisis, the presidential election, mass incarceration, gun violence: all these things are happening in front of our eyes with record news bytes all the time, every day.
What we might miss in our struggle to stay faithful and afoot of the news is the deep history of refugees and exiles, of struggle for reconciliation, and of faithfulness in the midst of political disintegration reflected in the stories of the Hebrew Bible and the Gospels.
To connect those dots, join your fellow clergy for our annual Pre-Advent retreat, a time of learning and preparation for the task of preaching Good News in the midst of the very real events of our neighborhoods and the world. Cameron Howard is a professor of Old Testament at Luther Seminary who also works with church leaders on dismantling racism. She’ll bring her insights on how you can learn from Isaiah and Matthew as you preach in Year A.
