For Preachers: Get back to basics in the Preaching Lab

It’s not too late to sign up for the upcoming Preaching Lab with veteran writer and speaker Barbara Mraz!BMraz
Online: October 1 – December 3, 2016
Meets in person: December 3, 2016 at the ECMN Retreat Center in Faribault, MN

Designed for folks who have some preaching experience already, this is a hands-on, practical course that helps create specific skills to prepare an excellent scripted sermon. Topics include: basic communication principles that have relevance for preaching; crafting a central idea based on a Biblical text; locating ideas when you don’t have any at the moment: organizational options; where to find quality resources online and on paper; methods for supporting an idea (stories, anecdotes, personal experience, quotation, even statistics); enlivening a sermon through literary devices such as dialogue and comparisons; creating introductions that capture attention and point the way; and planning conclusions that end the sermon with a bang not a whimper (in TS Eliot’s fine phrase).

In seven weeks we can’t do it all, so some attention will be paid to selected aspects of delivery: pace, use of pauses, vocal emphasis, but if you have created a sermon that you love, delivery improves dramatically!

Participants will learn through analysis of sample sermons and directed exercises in the areas listed above. They will learn through examples and then attempt the “strategy” themselves. Work will be shared online and everyone is encouraged to chime in.

Cost: $300 includes both in-person events and the online course. Members of Total/Shared Ministry teams participate for $150. And as always, matching grants are available, and if money is truly an obstacle, we’ll make a way — just contact susan.d@episcopalmn.org.
